Truman was the 33rd president of the United States after taking over office when Franklin Roosevelt passed away from poor health. WWII was successfully ended under Truman presidency, but as tensions grew with the Soviet Union in the post war era, it eventually led to the on start of the Cold War. Truman served in France as an artillery officer. A few weeks following Truman's entrance to the office, Germany surrendered, but Japan was still fighting. After learning about the Manhattan Project, he ordered that atomic weapons were to be used against Japan to force them to surrender, and eventually they did. He created the Truman Doctrine in attempts to contain communism and issued the Marshall Plan to rebuild Europe. He helped with the founding of the United nations and oversaw the creation of NATO.
